Dirty Projectors will be performing tomorrow at Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the kick-off celebration for the venue’s Next Stage Campaign along with other performers/artists like Laurie Anderson, Brightblack Morning Lights, Nona Hendryx, and Poor Baby Bree. It’s a chance for these Brooklyn art-rockers to show their stuff in contrast to other kinds of artists- visual and dance. Even though this is a rather pricey performance, it’s definitely worth it if you’re looking for a special night out. Unfortunately, indie music rarely comes together with the fine arts. I suspect that watching the Dirty Projectors through this lens will give an entirely different perspective on the band, as opposed to, say, watching them open for Dan Deacon at Brooklyn Masonic Temple.
For those not familiar with Dirty Projectors, they’re an accessible experimental rock band with schizophrenic guitars and other-worldly vocals. Their music is complicated and fascinating, yet still entertaining. I saw them play at the aforementioned Dan Deacon show and was utterly captivated by their performance (in my opinion, they stole the show). There’s a new track of theirs with David Byrne at the bottom of this post, as well as a fun cover that they did of Abba’s “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie.”
