I’m very behind the times on this one. As I was perusing tomorrow’s happenings, I noticed that the Tall Firs were playing with a band called Celebration. I thought, “That’s a neat band name,” and decided to check them out. Apparently, they are a couple who has been making indie music for several years with different collaborators under many different names. They are friends with TV On the Radio, and were part of the early rise of the Baltimore scene in 2005-6. Pitchfork hasn’t really liked their two albums, but apparently finds them worthy of many postings. They haven’t done too much since 2007, but are coming out of hibernation to play a show at Glasslands and a show in Baltimore. Based on the few songs on their myspace, I like what I hear. I’d describe it, loosely, as Beach House crossed with Feist. Lead singer, Katrina Ford has a righteous voice, and I’d like to see her perform live. Tall Firs is a very nice shoe-gazy band. If you’re into that sort of thing, you should love them live.
There are some other notable shows going on that I just have to mention briefly. Telepathe is playing at 92YTribeca, Noah and the Whale/Ferraby Linoheart are playing at Music Hall of Williamburg, and My Teenage Stride is playing one of the first shows at new Todd P. venue, The Jackson, in Long Island City.
