I forget how I stumbled across Kittens Ablaze, but I’ve been thinking about doing a post on them for a few days now. The first time I listened to their song “Gloom Doom Buttercups” I wasn’t really sure. First of all, Kittens Ablaze isn’t my favorite band name ever, nor is “Gloom Doom Buttercups” a fantastic name for a song. On my first listen, I thought that maybe the band sounded a little cheesy- the lead singer’s voice is a bit on the…whiny side of the spectrum. On my second listen, I noticed the catchy whistling, the Ra Ra Riot-esque guitar parts, the clever lyrical turns like “Lie to me in four good power chords.” Three days later, I just want to listen to the song over and over again. All of the songs on their myspace page are like pop-rock journeys through a colorful fantasy world. They start off in one direction and take a completely unexpected, delightful turn. I definitely recommend checking out the track below, and if you like it, check out the rest of the tunes on their myspace. You can catch them live at Santos Party House on March 13th and at the Bell House on March 16th.
