There and Back Again #1: Paul Simon's Graceland
This is a new segment on the blog! Every Wednesday (or so) I will go back and revisit an album that is considered to be a “great album” or a “classic album.” It will also be an album I’ve never heard. I’m doing this for a few reasons. First of all, I want this blog [...]
Recommended Thursday Show: Sharon Van Etten and BAM – two great things for the price of one!
I know, I know, this blog gives Sharon Van Etten A LOT of love. But that’s because she deserves it. Van Etten is one of the most haunting singer-songwriters I’ve ever seen, and I hope everyone falls in love with her, too. This show is actually two shows at Monkeytown in Brooklyn, one at 7:30 [...]
Incredible New Video: "Evident Utensil" by Chairlift
[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.781996&w=425&h=350&fv=file%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.pitchfork.tv%2Fnode%2F2964%2Fembed.xml] I think this is one of the coolest music videos I have ever seen. The song is good enough, but the video takes it to another level. This was what the Animal Collective “My Girls” video should have been like. So inventive, so entertaining.
Recommended Wednesday Show: The Silent League and Robbers On High Street at Union Pool
The Silent League make beautiful, beautiful music. Often garnering comparisons to the Flaming Lips, The Silent League’s songs are huge, dramatic orchestral pop. They swoop along with horn swells and pianos. Maybe not for everyone, but certainly easy to listen to for anyone. The New York Times even goes as far to say, “Brian Wilson’s [...]
Fun New Song: "Take Off Your Sunglasses" by Ezra Furman and the Harpoons
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0HvpwTS1xc&color1=0x6699&color2=0x54abd6&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1] This song isn’t exactly brand new, but the video is. The jangly indie guitars, the quick sing/speak lyrics, and the fuzzy 1970s grain of the video makes this track irresistible to me. It’s a pretty compelling song- it somehow just pulls you in. It reminds me a little bit of a Dylan song crossed with a [...]
Recommended Tuesday Show: The Morning Benders, The Submarines, Dawn Landes, and Maricopa at Mercury Lounge
I’m feeling pretty meh ab0ut the shows going down on Tuesday. If you’re really looking for something to do, however, this is probably your best bet. The Submarines, The Morning Benders, and Maricopa all seem to play pretty standard indie-pop fare. Certainly enjoyable, but not altogether memorable. You might know The Submarines from their song, [...]

Recommended Monday Show: Nous Non Plus at Mercury Lounge!!!
I’ve been lucky enough to have seen Nous Non Plus play once before. It was at Swarthmore and they were opening for Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys. (Who were awful that night, but I’ve heard have since gotten much better. They’re now just called The Skeletons.) No one had heard of them or knew [...]

Recommended Sunday Show: This Is Getting Repetitive…
I know I just recommended this show for Friday, but the Wavves, Nodzzz, Blank Dogs, and Woods tour is playing again in New York. This time they’re at Barnard College’s radio station. Tickets are $5 and doors open at 1PM. If you haven’t seen them yet, then go, go, go!!
Recommended Saturday Show: Final Fantasy at The Kitchen
Oh my goodness, just go see this show. Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy has absolutely stunning orchestral, fantastical songs that will transport you to another world. A frequent member of Arcade Fire, it’s pretty great that this show is only $8. It starts at 8PM at The Kitchen. Matt Smith is opening.
Photos: The Soundscapes, The New York Howl, and Shilpa Ray at Le Poisson Rouge
Last night The Soundscapes, The New York Howl, and Shilpa Ray rocked the socks off of a small, frozen, and dedicated crowd. Soundscapes were pleasant noise-rock and Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers put on a great, rockin’ show. The surprise of the night, however, was the The New York Howl. Their stage presence blew [...]
