I learned two incontrovertible facts last night. 1. Southpaw is a terrible venue for taking photographs. 2. Pattern Is Movement is awesome. I really like Southpaw. It’s a nice place to see music, but the height of the stage and the lighting make taking pictures really difficult. Which is too bad, because Pattern Is Movement is one of the most interesting acts I’ve seen recently. First of all, these two guys are so LIKABLE. For instance, the first thing they said when they got onstage was “Is there a way to manipulate these lights to make us look…uh…less fat?” The degree to which they do not take themselves seriously, but take their music seriously, is the best you could ask for from any band. I know that music should be judged solely on music, but it’s so much easier to enjoy when it’s clear that two very, very nice people are making it.
Not that Pattern Is Movement needs any boost in the excellent tunes department. Singer Andrew Thiboldeaux’s operatic, dramatic vocals slide perfectly above Chris Ward’s precise, kinetic drumming. Their music is poignant, funny, and constantly changing (Pattern Is Movement is a very suitable name for the this band), and it translates well live. Please check out their myspace or see them live. They are playing again tonight at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.
St. Louis, MO band So Many Dynamos were a fitting opener. Spastic, fidgety, and loud, this foursome put on an entertaining set. Check out the photos below.

So Many Dynamos were slated to open the originally-scheduled Ra Ra Riot show at Olde Club, and I was disappointed I didn’t get to see them when the show got canceled. I like them a lot. I’m glad to hear they were good.
[...] out the first single and totally weird video above. Pattern Is Movement is also playing. I caught them earlier this year at Southpaw, and I can safely say that they are great. Should be a pretty fantastic night of [...]
