Photos: Knight School, Let's Wrestle, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart played to a sold-out crowd at the Bell House this past Friday night.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since these guys were unknown just a few months ago.  They seemed really, really thankful and a bit staggered by their sudden popularity.  As soon as they picked [...]

Recommended Saturday Show: Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, and Women at Music Hall of Williamsburg

I’m running out the door right now to go see POBPAH at The Bell House.  I don’t have time to write too much, but trust me, this is a STELLAR line-up.  Three truly stand-out acts in today’s indie rock scene.  Check out some of the mp3s below. MP3: “Shattered Shrine” – Crystal Stilts MP3: “Black [...]

Sweet New Song: "Happy Birthday You" by Jay Jay Pistolet

I heard this mp3 after it was recently posted on Brooklyn Vegan.  Out of the many, many songs I listened to today, this one by Jay Jay Pistolet definitely stood out.  It’s adorable, almost precious, but has a rolling beat underneath that keeps it moving along.  The hook at the end of the chorus is [...]

Recommended Friday Show: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Let's Wrestle, and Knight School at The Bell House

There is so much going on this pre-SXSW weekend!  Lots of bands play in NYC to get ready for the big week ahead.  This Friday there’s tons of great bands to choose from: Les Savy Fav at Brooklyn Masonic Temple and even Titus Andronicus and The Wrens on one bill.  But, I have to whole-heartedly [...]

Recommended Thursday Show: The Death Set, Team Robespierre, NinjaSonik, and Cerebral Ballzy at The Shank

Despite the somewhat terrifying name of the Greenpoint venue, this show will definitely be a fun one.  It’s the start of the Newmore Switchblades Tour, which encompasses all of these bands and multiple states (plus Totally Michael, whom I know nothing about but sound fun based on their myspace).  NinjaSonik is a tongue-in-cheek hip-hop group [...]

Recommended Wednesday Show: Let's Wrestle at Maxwell's

I’ve been hearing a lot about Let’s Wrestle recently.  I was a bit reluctant to check them out because they’ve been so buzzy, but once I saw that the first song on this British band’s MySpace was called “I Wish I Was In Husker Du.”  Yes!  Grade-A rock reference.  They play Brit rock with swagger- think [...]

SXSW Sampler, Part I

I’ve been a bit busy this week preparing for SXSW.  I want to bring you the very best coverage I can (partying it up with Racheal Ray and The Hold Steady) so I’ve been lacking a bit on the writing this week.  I’d like to attempt to make it up to you by putting together [...]

Recommended Tuesday Show: Bear Hands (and Cursive) at Bowery Ballroom

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7G_sQ5aOZA&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1] Cursive, who’s latest album has been getting pretty decent reviews, is playing Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night.  But the real reason to make it down (or up)  to the LES is Bear Hands.  I have a (not too) funny story about Bear Hands.  I was on vacation with my mother at a spa in Massachusetts. [...]

Photos: Real Estate and Dinowalrus at Dead Herring

Dead Herring is a great place to see bands.  The cozy apartment is warm and welcoming with colorful streamers running across the ceiling and fresh-baked cookies coming out of the oven.  There’s even a perfect loft space to perch on, peering down on the bands from above.  Real Estate was the first band of the [...]
