This show is quite a bit after the fact now, but I still wanted to put up these photos. Since I’m so behind on this, I’ll keep the review short. What it basically boils down to is that it was a very fun night of good, not great, music filled with instruments of all sorts: trombones, steel guitars, tubas, saxophones, even a harmonium. The Woes are an incredibly entertaining mix of New Orleans style jazz and classic rock, plus a bunch of other diverse genres thrown into the mix. They’re the type of band that I’d love to see at an outdoor festival, just dancing barefoot in the grass, beer in hand.
Elvis Perkins‘ set got off to a slow start, but crescendoed throughout the evening until his incredible encore. If the show began in the quietest way possible, with him on an acoustic guitar, it ended with a slam-bang finish, all of the musicians of the night coming out to join him. He’s got a steady and strong stage presence, a beautiful voice, and some good songwriting capabilities. I wasn’t blown away by anything I heard, but it’s definitely good.
