Sunday night’s show at the always-lovely Union Hall was entertaining enough. It’s getting a little bit past its expiration date (plus, it’s getting late), so I’ll keep this brief. Openers, The WoWz played mediocre, throw-back Buddy Holly-era, simplistic (not in a bad way) rock. I was a bit worried at first that they were too precious, but after they invited their friend up to play the saw (I love it when people play the saw! The last time I saw someone play the saw live was the first time I saw The Hold Steady live, several years ago), their songs got more rocking and more confident. I really enjoyed some of the songs towards the end of their set, but the beginning was just a bit to vanilla for me.
I Was A King are Norwegian pop-rock gems. They chatted in their cute accents in between songs and played Guided By Voices covers. I mean, come on, who doesn’t love Guided By Voices covers? Their thick, bright guitar tones were the perfect mix of cheery and rocking. I particularly enjoyed their drummer, who kept good time and had this look on his face the entire time of “Woohoo! I’m playing drums! I love what I do!” That’s always fun to watch. I’d highly recommend this band to anyone who’s been into The Pains of Being Pure At Heart lately.
