Ezra Furman is one band where I do not understand why they aren’t more popular yet. I don’t think they should be popular just because they’re good (they are). Lots of bands I think are very good will never get popular, but Furman’s pop sensibilities are so accessible that I can’t really imagine who their songs wouldn’t appeal to. I blogged about their video for “Take Off Your Sunglasses,” an excellent pop gem anchored by harmonica and a very nice bass line. I caught them on the last day of SXSW this year, and they still put on a good show despite the dwindling craziness. They are certainly worthy of a trip to Pianos.
If that isn’t enough to convince you, then Darlings definitely should. To be perfectly honest, they sound just like all the other Brooklyn lo-fi-ish bands do right now, but perhaps a cut above the rest. Their songs are good and enjoyable, and I like them, plain and simple. I’ve heard good things about their live show, though I can’t testify to that myself (and unfortunately the Hold Steady won out over this show for tomorrow, but I was very conflicted about it, so that should tell you something, too). Just listen to the song below; I think you’ll like it. Peasant is a pleasant singer-songwriter, and an all-around nice guy, so you should try to get their early for his set, too.

Who would win a fight: Darlings or Those Darlins?

Those Darlins, hands down. They are in-tense. Speaking of, they’re playing at Southpaw on July 10th. Can’t wait!
