I once made a promise to myself that I would never write about the Hold Steady on this blog. Well, we all learn things as time goes on. One thing I’m learning right now is that four vodka tonics on an empty stomach are a great idea for a Hold Steady show, but are a decidedly bad idea for blogging. Ah well, I promise not to give too much of a review, since I don’t think you can really write objectively about something you love. But, in short, the boys were in top form tonight for their second of four performances in New York this week. The mix was a bit more bass-heavy than usual, which was interesting, but the normal energy was entirely there. The setlist was excellent, though there was nothing from Almost Killed Me. Starting off the show with “Crucifixion” and “Resurrection” was a rare treat, one that I’ve only seen once before and towards the end of the set. I must say, the crowd was too a bit too tame, but once the boys played “Hoodrat” everyone got more into it. Overall, excellent, excellent show. No complaints from me. Sorry about the crappy iphone photos, I just can’t bring myself to take pictures during a Hold Steady show.
The Hold Steady:

The setlist that I got had inspirational messages written all over it. I wonder who needs the pick-me-up?
