This is a highly recommended show. First of all, the venue is amazing. No, it’s not the old Shea Stadium, it’s a brand new venue in Brooklyn that offers an amazing service for artists and bands. They record all of the shows that happen there and mix them, so every band who plays has access to free live recording. And I know from first-hand experience that the guys who run it are very nice. A special operation, if you ask me.
The fact that Marnie Stern is playing somewhere so small at this point in her career is pretty astounding, and I would not miss out on this show (I can’t make it because of prior commitments, but I really, really wish I could). Stern plays hyperactive guitar-rock; her somehow not annoyingly high voice stops and starts over her ridiculously skillfull shredding. I caught her during CMJ at the Knitting Factory and was thoroughly impressed, and I imagine that she’ll put on a powerfully fun performance for the Shea Stadium crew.
Then, to round out the set with a little variety, the Fly Girlz are playing, as well. This project is seriously cool (or academcially problematic if you look at in a certain way, but I’d like to just think it’s cool). Basically, a few indie rockers from Excepter and Skeletons work on a project where they collaborate on music with young people from schools in areas where hipsters are beginning to leak into, like Bushwick and Bed-Stuy. You can read more about it right here on their myspace page. The Fly Girlz is a group of young women from ages 12-14 who have made created some sweet hip-hop through the project. It will definitely be something different, and should make for a very diverse, entertaining show. MP3s below.
