I’ve been a big champion of Ezra Furman’s latest single, “Take Off Your Sunglasses.” It’s a near-perfect poppy gem. I also really enjoyed their set that I caught at SXSW this year. All in all, I’ve been pretty enamored with this simple, rocking band. It wasn’t until last night that I realized that maybe one of the reasons I like them so much is that I have a secret (well, not anymore) crush on Ezra and everyone else in the band. Apparently, I’m not the only one. The audience was skewed in the direction of adoring females far more than usual at Pianos last night. Ezra is incredibly adorable, and that’s half the appeal with these Bostonians. Strange, Dylan-esque, mumbling almost sensical musings into the mic between songs, handing out candy because “the audience had been good,” – he’s charming with just enough weirdness thrown in to make him interesting, just like the songs he writes. Nothing inventive here, but lovable, comforting rock. A little bit like quality soul food, it’s not anything you haven’t tried before, but without fail, it makes you feel good. If you missed them last night, you can catch them at Pianos again next Tuesday. ***Now with drawing by Meredith Leich!
