Recommended (Free) Wednesday Show: Jay Reatard at Stuy Town's Oval

I have a lot of mixed feelings about recommending this show, but ultimately I think it’s a good choice.  My hesitation, first and foremost, has to do with my past personal interactions with Jay Reatard.  He’s rude, obnoxious, and generally trashed Olde Club and made my job harder.  My second raised eyebrow towards this show comes from the location.  Have you ever been to Stuy town?  I’ve had the pleasure of getting lost in the sprawling apartment complex more than once.  Imagine well-manicured lawns with a neighborly mix of NYU grad students, elderly people, and stroller-pushing yuppies.  Imagine a day-care center, neighborhood lounge, and many playgrounds.  Now imagine the knife-wielding wacko pictured above kicking out his usual twenty-five minutes of jams, smack dab in the middle of all that normal-ness.  That’s got to be the biggest appeal of this show.  To see how on Earth Reatard’s punk is going to fit into this setting.

Besides all that, I really like Reatard’s latest single, which you can download below.  Even if I think the guy’s an asshole, I like his music.  And that should be the bottom line, I suppose.  AND, the show is free.

yes! i thought you might comment! i mean, if that’s really you, but what with google alerts these days it’s not that unlikely.

you have met me! you came and played at my college about a year and a half ago. you guys drank all of our beer, harassed students about getting drugs, and left an enormous mess in our green room for me to clean up, without ever saying thank you for all the free booze/food. i mean, it’s totally cool now and makes for a good story, and should probably be expected from a bad-ass punk band. all in all, it was actually a pretty fun night and a great show.

i love your music! i think the band is great! besides, this sort of press only helps your rock n roll ethos. anyways, i’m a total square, so don’t mind me at all. have a great show tonight!

I had similar thoughts when I saw this on the summer music lineup at Stuy Town…are the retirees sunning themselves by the fountain and the stroller-pushing crowds going to go for this? I might be out and about part of the evening, but should be returning to my sprawling apartment complex later–if you’re coming by, give me a call.

Wow! I hope that when I start a blog, Los Campesinos come by and bitch at me when I call them out for being rude, obnoxious prima dona dickheads.

p.s. Jay, thanks for your wonderful 15 minute show at our college.

p.p.s. I lived in Stuy Town until I was 5. Where were the punk rockers then??
