Handsome Furs is not the kind of band I’d normally like. There’s a lot of keyboards. A lot of keyboards. I mean, there’s just one woman playing the keyboards, but it’s a substantial part of their songs. The other half of the music happens to be Dan Boeckner, an essential component of one of my faves, Wolf Parade. I caught the duo at SXSW, and he shreds so hard on guitar and Alexei Perry pours so much energy into her performance that they completely stole my heart, despite my disinclination towards electronic-leaning bands. I started to pay real attention to the album they released earlier this year, Face Control, and found that it’s almost as excellent as the first Wolf Parade album. The same energy that Boeckner brought to Apologies is apparent on Face Control: his guitar and vocals constantly toe the line between in and out of control, emotionally and musically. Plus, their video for the song “I’m Confused” above is totally cool (watch until the end- he vomits blood into her mouth, woah!).
This show should be a guaranteed good time with lots of dancing. If you can’t catch them at Bowery on Tuesday, there’s always Music Hall of Williamsburg on Wednesday.
