Yeasayer is a good band. Watching them play on the huge stage at Pier 54 on the Hudson (not the East River, as I mistakenly posted yesterday), I wondered what it must have been like to see them in tiny Brooklyn venues just a few years ago. They have so much stage presence that they must have burst venues like that at the seams. When it comes down to it, they’re a band that relies mostly on electronics. Usually I’m loathe to watch these kinds of performances- they usually end up being more about button-pushing than actual performing-but Yeasayer has so much charisma they completely escape this pitfall. Their live show sounds nothing like their album. They don’t necessarily make improvements upon the songs, but they definitely make watching and listening more interesting. They also played several new songs, and all of them sounded good, though there were no hit singles like “2080″ so far as I could tell. This is one band who I really think deserves all the success they’ve achieved.
Amazing Baby, on the other hand, were terrible. They were so boring they’re almost not worth even writing about. If I had to compare them to another band, it would be Hep Alien. That’s right, the terrible band on the Gilmore Girls. A total vanilla, cheesy rock band. The crowd could barely muster up enough energy to politely clap. How has this band gotten to this point? I’ve avoided them before because I really don’t like their band name, and it looks like my instincts were right. The best thing about their set was the inappropriately-moshing-guy, who you can see everyone staring at it in one of the photos. Anyways, pictures below.
