These late August warm and humid days have seen me neglecting this blog, but I’ve been listening to a lot of great music. Now that the weather’s broken, I’d better get down to it. Here’s four of my favorite songs I’ve heard recently. And I know it’s a little late, but I’d just like to mention that the new Megafaun album totally rules (and The xx are being overhyped, though I do enjoy the vocals on their new album).
The Generationals are a young band from New Orleans. I don’t hear a lot of bands coming out New Orleans, so this duo definitely has a unique mystique. Their new album is all over the map. Sometimes it sounds like straight-up indie rock, and sometimes it sounds like garage doo-wop. Like the song below. ”When They Fight They Fight,” is just so incredibly down-home pleasant and catchy. Play it; I can almost guarantee you’ll like it.
This Box Elders song is sort of in the same vein- a catchy chorus and an older-sounding fidelity, but with decidedly more punk influences. It’s short and sweet, except for the whole fact that it’s about suicide, which shows off the band’s delightful sense of humor. It’s so short that I’d recommend doing some searching (or better yet, buying) and procuring the rest of their new album.
Throw Me The Statue are from Seattle and are on Secretly Canadian (so many non-Brooklyn bands in one posting!). This song will remind you of your favorite nineties Third Eye Blind song. Except good. Really.
The Fruit Bats have been around for ten years now, but I’ve somehow managed to avoid any serious listening to them. I’m glad that’s changed with their new album, The Ruminant Band, because it is one of the cheeriest, feel-good collection of songs I’ve heard in awhile. It’s not that it’s so overtly happy, but the guitar tones are so warm and the sound is so thick and layered that it’s the type of album that can keep you company. Like when you’re alone and blogging at midnight on a Monday. Check out the song below. One last upbeat number in a great set of end of the summer tunes.
