CMJ: Tuesday's Recommended Day Party

If you’re any kind of music enthusiast who lives in New York, you’re probably aware that tomorrow is the start of CMJ, New York’s very own miniature SXSW.  The conference/festival is really more for music industry types than fans, but just because you don’t have a ridiculously expensive CMJ badge doesn’t mean that you can’t go see great music for free all week.  Plus, many of the parties happening around town have open bars, so you might even drink some free booze, too.  A very fun week if you don’t let it all overwhelm you.

Day shows are definitely your best bet if you’re badgeless.  They’re almost always free and tend to be run by smaller publications and bloggers (read: better bands).  For each day for CMJ, I’ll give you my recommendation for a day party, and then a recommendation for how to spend your evening, though that’s probably a bit less expensive if you have a CMJ badge.  You won’t see any of my actual coverage of the festival here.  I’m writing for BreakThru Radio this time around, and I’ll give you links to that coverage daily.

Pop Tarts Suck Toasted’s day party at Cake Shop tomorrow isn’t just the only show in town, it’s probably one of the best showcases all week.  I’ve said how much I like Dinosaur Feathers, Holiday Shores, Grooms, and Motel Motel on this blog before.  Sisters is also an act that I very much want to see.  Check out their mp3 below.  Will Stratton is an incredible singer/songwriter.  I’ve had the pleasure of hearing him before, and if you like Sufjany, introspective, beautiful music, you will like Will, too.  If you don’t have to be at work tomorrow, Cake Shop is the place to be.
