Photos: Beat Radio, pow wow!, and Kittens Ablaze at The Studio At Webster Hall

Of course I finally get a nice new camera, but neglect to also obtain the charger I need.  Oy.  So bear with me on these photos here.  Anyways, it was a good show at The Studio this past Friday.  I didn’t quite have the energy to stay for Wild Yaks, but I’m sure they were fun and crazy as always.  The night got off to a good start with the pleasant but somewhat unremarkable Beat Radio.  pow wow! were up next, with a brand new line-up of five.  You could tell that they still need to practice a bit with their new members, but my favorites like “23 19″ had a new energy that bodes well for the band’s future.  Cavalier Rose played next, and I haven’t even bothered to post photos of them.  Their derivative bar-band style was not my thing.

The highlight of the night was Kittens Ablaze.  I’ve been intrigued by a few tracks of theirs floating around the internet for the better part of this year, but somehow I always missed out on seeing them live.  I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to see one of the most exciting new bands I’ve encountered in quite some time.  They’re one part Flogging Molly, one part Ra Ra Riot, and one part your favorite emo band from high school.  They put so much unique energy into their performance that they could never possibly win over the arty hipsters’ hearts, but I hope that their music and performance stand enough on their own that they’ll succeed in this business without the Brooklyn hype machine.  Despite atrocious sound that was out of their control, Kittens Ablaze whirled around the stage, pumping out their anthemic rock pop tunes with abandon.  I was genuinely excited while watching them perform in a way that I haven’t felt about a band in a long time.
