I know I recommended a Beach Fossils show yesterday, as well. They’re good, but it’s who’s playing with them tonight that’s exciting. Alex Bleeker is Real Estate’s bass player, and his own project sounds like some lost late-6os acid-blues-rock record. Definitely cool stuff. Nude Beach is from Pennsylvania and plays spacey, droney rock that appeals to me on their MySpace, but I’m not sure how interesting it will be to watch live.
The real reason I’m excited about this show, though, is Cloud Nothings. 18 years old and from Cleveland, Ohio, this is apparently some kid’s bedroom project. I’d never heard of him before looking him up to research this show just now, but I’ve immediately fallen in love with every song on his MySpace. They’re originally muddled, but derivative of the type of bands we all already like. Much like fellow Ohioans, Times New Viking, he’s very good at enveloping pop melodies in scratchy noise. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if someone sent him into a studio to rerecord these songs and we heard them on an episode of Gossip Girl. I hope that doesn’t happen- they’re delightfully bedroom-original as is- but the songs have a wonderfully cinematic teenage angst to them. And we do love our teenage angst here at NYRM. Listen to the songs below, add them to your iPod, and put them on repeat.
