Cake Shop, Cake Shop, Cake Shop. Some weeks it’s Brooklyn Bowl, some weeks it’s Bruar Falls, this week it’s Cake Shop. Good show after good show. However, If you didn’t see Harlem on Wednesday at Merc and you can’t see them on Saturday, you may want to make Monster Island Basement your destination of choice instead of Cake Shop (the excellent Frankie & the Outs are also playing), but this is really one of those A+ Gosh Wow kind of shows. Obits aren’t exactly your typical young, upstart Brooklyn band. Instead of having the glow of youth to propel them through their punk-rock performances, they have the advantage of killer experience. These guys have all been around the block before in other bands, and have a lot serious 90s hardcore and punk influences. They played their first show at Cake Shop in 2008, so it’s only fitting that they’re coming back around to celebrate the release of their new record. I absolutely loved their first one, I Blame You, which came out on Sub Pop last year. These guys really know how to rock and will put on a ridiculous show in a space like Cake Shop. I saw them nearly upstage Blitzen Trapper at the Sub Pop showcase at SXSW last year. As an added bonus, Gray Goods is playing! I still haven’t seen them (working on that), but am totally enamored by the tracks they have up on their MySpace. You can also catch Obits at Cake Shop on Saturday night, but no Gray Goods with them then.
