Akron/Family have been hit or miss for the last several years. When I saw them play at Olde Club in 2006, it was one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen (and the second worst Olde Club show ever, only beaten out by Skeletons and the Girl Faced Boys, who were clearly on some sort of crazy psychotropic drug). I’ve also had trusted friends tell me that their New Years show at the Knitting Factory was one of the best shows of all time. I’m wild about some of their songs, not so thrilled by others. Still, it seems like the band is in a good place now, and I’m betting this MHOW show will be pretty good. I’m not honestly all that familiar with Warpaint, but it’s fairly evocative, moody, dark music from Los Angeles. You can check them out here. I know absolutely nothing about Please the Trees. I’m not thrilled by anything on their MySpace, but they’re apparently from the Czech Republic, so that’s kind of cool.
The song attached to this post is especially noteworthy. It’s called “Woody Guthrie’s America,” and it’s just the kind of folk-Americana that’s at the heart of the Akron/Family I really love. The song is also neat because they’ve issues a challenge to their friends and fans to record their own versions of the song. So give it a listen, and maybe take a stab at making it your own!
