I was going to recommend the Cloud Nothings/Fluffy Lumbers show at Monster Island Basement, but decided to go with this show on a recommendation from a friend. What’s the point of only writing about the same bands all the time? Time for some new blood. Total Slacker we already know and love, but Quiet Hooves is a neato little band coming out of Athens, Georgia. I’ve only listened to the songs on their MySpace, but am already thoroughly intrigued. They’re definitely not for you if you’re just looking for something easy and breezy to put on, but they are extremely interesting and ecclectic. Some songs sound like simple lo-fi garage, some sound like freak folk, and some sound like 70s soul songs from a depraved future. Awesome. From these songs on their MySpace, it seems like we’re dealing with a pretty smart, unique band here.
Bubbly Mommy Gun has one of the most ridiculous band names I’ve ever heard. It’s partially explained by the photo on their MySpace, but only partially. Their MySpace also reveals a set of strange, sort of noise songs, some of which sound like they could be the background of cheesy 70s commercials, but are actually way more interesting than that. In some ways they remind me of Washed Out, but infinitely less annoying and with a much more down to Earth sound. I think this will be a different, interesting show to check out. Give the MP3 below a listen; I bet you’ll really dig it.
