It’s funny. I’ve come to think of Bowerbirds as an old standard- one of those bands that’s been around forever and that everyone knows about. Which isn’t quite accurate at all. They’ve only been around for four years, have only put out two albums, and the last time I saw them play New York was about a year ago at Mercury Lounge. Now they’re headlining a Bowery Ballroom show. The attention is completely deserved. Though sometimes their dark dark dark folk tunes don’t entirely speak to me, they’re well-crafted and beautiful songs, and they’re a fun band to watch live in a musical sense. The chestnut timbre of their voices really come through in a live setting. Speaking of most excellent voices, Death Vessel is also playing the show. Joel Thibodeau’s androgynously high lilt is captivating, and I always enjoy watching Death Vessel play.

Aw, bowerbirds! I haven’t thought about them in a while. I love your description of the “chestnut timbre of their voices.”
